Bruichladdich Octomore 10 Year Old 5th Release The Impossible Equation
Octomore is the super-heavily peated single malt produced by Bruichladdich distillery, the most routinely heavily peated in the world. The whisky is named after the farm of the same name, located on a hillside north of the town of Port Charlotte. Having been traditionally an un-peated Single Malt due to the needs of its former owners for their blends, Murray McDavid was quick to diversify the Bruichladdich portfolio, also introducing the more lightly peated Port Charlotte and Lochindaal.
This is the 5th edition of the 10 Year Old from Octomore, ‘The Impossible Equation’. The whisky spent its initial maturation of 5 years in first fill ex-American oak casks, before being re-casked into wine barriques for its final five years. These wine casks were sourced from a bodega in northern Spain located in the Ribera del Duero region.
This is a Distillery Exclusive, only 3,500 bottles released.
Nose: Seville oranges and roasted hazelnuts initially come through, while gentle peat smoke wisps around toasted oak. Tart lemon and pear drops bring another dimension to the sweetness. There is a nutty, malty base and as this wonderful dram opens further, vanilla from bourbon-soaked oak rises and takes on the dominance of earthy peat smoke.
Taste: The texture is muscular and lean with a warming heat, complemented by the depth of the oak and the brooding smoke. Golden syrup, lemon drizzle, heather honey and black cherries give some succulence alongside the toasted French oak spices and tannins. Roasted coffee and salted caramel bring a sweet and savoury edge. A consistent fruity cherry and blackcurrant top note runs through the dram, beautifully counterbalancing the oak and smoke dominance.
Finish: A dark finish with deep smoky notes of boot polish and charred heather. The oak, with its rich toasted nutty character, marries wonderfully and adds a depth that needs to be explored.
Please note: The Octomore range outer tins are extremely prone to dings and scratches. The tins often arrive into our warehouse suffering from minor damage in transit. This is out of our control. When we dispatch to our customers, we will re-pack to avoid further damage in transit but collectors should have reasonable expectations in this regard.
