Shizuoka Pot Still W 100% Imported Barley First Edition
Opened in 2017, Shizuoka distillery is one of the youngest in Japan. It is located in the mountains around the city named Shizuoka and it is owned by Gaia Flow. It is on the banks of the Nakakouchi River in the Tamagawa District of Oku-Shizu, relatively close to iconic Mount Fuji.
The grain mill and one of their wash stills were bought over from the now legendary Karuizawa distillery, which was dismantled in 2011. The equipment was purchased as is, with only one of the three Karuizawa stills still in use. The other two displayed are at the new distillery, as a tribute to Karuizawa.
This bottle was released in mid-2022 and was produced using 100% imported barley, 70% of which was peated. This is the second in the W series, consisting of the original spirit from the wood-fired direct distiller W, the successor to Shizuoka Distillery’s latest release, Prologue W, which was released in 2021. It has been aged in a combination of ex-Bourbon and virgin oak casks.
Nose: Honey with cream and roasted bread, then the mild peat scents come at play with exotic herbs and smoked gingerbread.
Taste: Fresh biscuits with caramel and roasted nuts. All this is refined with peat smoke.
Finish: Malty sweetness with a pinch of peat smoke that lingers for a long time.
